Leiomyosarcoma of the Rectum

Abstract
Leiomyosarcoma of the rectum is a rare disease. The treatment of rectal leiomyosarcoma is controversial. For selected low-grade tumors, some authors recominoperineal resection. When the results of local excision of these lesions were compared
with
radical excision, the tendency to local recurrence was high, however the crude survival rates after 7~8 years appeared similar whether treatment was by radical or local excision. The authors report one case of this rare tumor and its treatment
using
sphincter preserving surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy and radiation therapy. However, more experience and longer follow-up are needed before this treatment could be practised routinely.
